How to make organic soap

When it comes to how to make organic soap it is the same as other homemade soapmaking methods. What differs is that you will use organic soapmaking supplies in your soap recipes.

Choosing organic soap making supplies can be somewhat confusing. There is a lot of marketing and media hype using words like natural, pure and organic.

Soap is an item that we all use every day for health and cleaning purposes. Yet, like most I was surprised when I started reading what went in a bar of soap…or should I say a “Moisturizing Bar” or a “Beauty Bar”. Because these products cannot even call themselves soaps because there is no natural soap base left!

Just detergent and harsh chemicals in some perfume!

It seems that the words natural and organic are used synonymously. There is certain subjectivity to these terms and legislation is a bit spotty.

Natural soap making means that you are using natural soap base ingredients. If you wish to make organic soap you will need to use organic soap making supplies for your oils, fats, butters, additives and scents.

You cannot make soap without lye (sodium hydroxide) it is simply IMPOSSIBLE.

You can make soap using an organic soap base with the melt and pour method. The organic natural soap base already has the lye in it and then you do not have to handle the chemical and you can add other organic soapmaking supplies ― thus ensuring an organic soap.

If you want to find out how to make natural soap for health reasons and/or skin conditions you simply need to find a soap recipe and use organic soapmaking supplies only. Certain soap supplies are gentler than others.

Organic soaps contain ONLY organic ingredients (except for the lye) and they leave the skin feeling wonderful and soft due to the moisturizing effect of these quality ingredients.

Getting the ingredients from an organic source will mean that you are able to ensure that the products are actually organics. The basic organic soapmaking supplies will include some:

  • oils: olive, sunflower, coconut, vegetable shortening
  • butters: shea , mango, cocoa
  • additives: can include pomace, seeds (strawberry, raspberry, apricot) as exfoliates
  • color can be added with herbs and spices
