We have compiled some cold process lard soap recipes. You can render your own lard from scratch.

Lard can be a controversial ingredient in soapmaking. Some believe that animal fat will make their soap greasy and clog pores. Actually, it is quite the contrary. Lard resembles the structure of human skin cells which is composed of saturated fats. Lard soap is closer to our skin than plant-based soaps.

From a soapmaking perspective, the ingredient is wonderful! A lard soap recipe will produce a creamy, white, hard and long-lasting bar. Other benefits are that lard is a soapmaking ingredient that is easy to access and inexpensive. It can be great for starting out or as a staple to all your recipes.

I can appreciate that certain people prefer to not use animal products and respect this choice. Alternatively, lard is a sustainable ingredient because we are using all the animal has to offer.

I obtained some pig fat and rendered it myself. It was a great old school experience that I think we should all try once.
